CrushStations is a game designed to enhance working memory, a crucial subskill of executive functions which involves holding information in mind and cognitively manipulating it (Diamond, 2013).
Players are challenged to memorize the color and species of creatures in order to rescue them and protect them from the grasps of a ravenous octopus.
How does CrushStations facilitate learning? Executive functions encompass a series of top-down, purpose-driven cognitive processes that empower individuals to regulate, supervise, and strategize behaviors and emotions. Miyake and Friedman’s model adopts a unified yet diversified perspective on executive functions by encompassing the three distinct yet interrelated components of inhibitory control, task-switching, and updating (Miyake et al., 2000).
What do research findings indicate? Our studies point towards the efficacy of CrushStations in honing working memory skills. The research backing this assertion is forthcoming.
Studies have revealed a correlation between executive functions and achievements in literacy and mathematics, resulting in long-term benefits in academic performance and preparedness for schooling (Blair & Razza, 2007; Brock, Rimm-Kaufman, Nathanson, & Grimm, 2009; St Clair-Thompson & Gathercole, 2006; Welsh, Nix, Blair, Bierman, & Nelson, 2010). Discrepancies in executive functions among preschoolers from low-income backgrounds compared to those from affluent families may contribute to the educational achievement gap (Blair & Razza, 2007; Noble, McCandliss, & Farah, 2007).
